Dirty deeds the key to beating West Coast Eagles
“Dirty footy” may be the best way to pick apart the reigning premiers after Port Adelaide did it to perfection last weekend.
That’s the view of Seven’s Talking Footy crew, who ran the rule over West Coast’s hefty loss at home in the wet last weekend.
Former North Melbourne champion Wayne Carey said the Power had denied their opponents the chance to gain clean intercept possession and calculate their way out of defence in typical kick-mark style, with the wet conditions helping the visitors’ cause.
“They went over there with a game plan. It was wet, obviously, so the ball was slippery,” Carey said.
“They didn’t want to kick the ball in long because of (Jeremy) McGovern and these guys who are great intercept marks.
“They kicked the ball in ugly.”
After the win, Power star Ollie Wines revealed the side had prioritised playing “dirty footy” against the Eagles.
After Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley yesterday admitted to taking notice of Port’s tactics, Tim Watson said other clubs would likely look to follow suit as a way of unsettling Adam Simpson’s side.
“The plan was to get it in there as low as you can and then fight for the next contest,” Watson said.
“Don’t kick it up in the air, don’t give it any hang time so those defenders can become part of the game.
“When (the plan) is successful like that, I would expect other sides will look at that.”
